After the Battle of San Jacinto, the surrender treaty was signed in Dr. George Moffitt Patrick’s cabin near modern-day Deer Park. Since that time, residents have been proud to refer to the city as “The Birthplace of Texas.” Today there is a replica of the original cabin in town, on Center St. The site of the original cabin was on Buffalo Bayou and is currently occupied by industrial facilities. Many of Deer Park’s cultural attractions and activities revolve around their Birthplace of Texas heritage. The San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site compliments Patrick’s Cabin, with historic flavor. Other area attractions simply borrow the heritage, such as the Battleground Golf Course, with 18-holes and a par 72 course, as well as banquet facilities. The Art Park Players have been entertaining the community for over 25 years. For those who love festivals, there is the Totally Texas Festival, hosted by the Deer Park Chamber of Commerce. It’s an early spring event based on local color, featuring a parade, a charity walk and run, a beauty pageant, music and an Old-Fashioned Bake-Off. Later in the year, in nearby Pasadena, Texas, is the world-famous Strawberry Festival, a multi-day event that attracts more than 60,000 people per year. Along with multi-staged entertainment, there is Mutton Bustin’, the Strawberry Parade, a BBQ Cook-off, over 100 booths, old-time contests like berry eating and washing pitcher tossing, as well as the presentation of the World’s Largest Shortcake. From an economic standpoint, Deer Park is known for being an affordable suburban community.
