Nicknamed, “The Hometown with a Heart” Tomball is an idyllic American small town, with a rich history, strong sense of community and solid focus on family life. The town was originally popular with settlers in the early 19th century, who found the rich soil and adequate rainfall a perfect combination for cultivation. And thus it remained a sleepy farming town for nearly one hundred years, under the name of Peck. This all changed in 1906 when Congressman Thomas Henry Ball convinced the railroad to establish a train depot in the community. The railroad line was ideally situated between the hill region to the north and the coastal region to the south. In addition, a gradual sloping grade into nearby Galveston allowed the railroad cars to carry maximum loads. With the establishment of the railroad depot, the town boomed, and in 1907 the name was changed to Tomball, in honor of the enterprising Congressman who put this city on the map. The principal annual festivals ate the German Heritage Festival held in spring, and the German Christmas Market. Both festivals feature multiple stages for music events; more than a hundred vendors for arts, crafts and clothing; ethnic foods, beers, and wines; a petting zoo; antique fair; as well as Heritage events. Life in Tomball is typically suburban American, revolving around family life, schools and charitable events. Tomball School District has a number of elementary and intermediate schools, as well as, Tomball High School and the recently opened Tomball Memorial High School.
